Italy became the first side to book their place in the final of UEFA Euro 2020 after beating Spain on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium in London.

After both sides missed their first efforts from the spot, the Azzurri scored four successive penalties to reach the showpiece match and are now one victory away from winning their first European Championship title since 1968.

Federico Chiesa broke the deadlock in an entertaining game on the hour mark, curling an effort into the top corner following a delightful counter attack to make it 1-0 to Italy.

With ten minutes remaining Spain levelled as Alvaro Morata finished a move that nice passing between him and Dani Olmo.

The two men involved in creating the equalising goal for Spain went from heroes to villains as their two misses in the penalty shoot-out proved crucial.

After Morata’s miss Jorginho calmly stroked home his penalty to send Italy through, and leave Spain to rue missed chances as they saw their chances of a fourth European Championship crown slip away.

Italy will now face the winners of the second semi-final, between England and Denmark, scheduled to take place tomorrow night (Wednesday) at the same venue.

England have never won the tournament in its history, while Denmark will be looking to triumph for a second time, following their win in 1992.
