More than 50 aspiring taekwondo instructors attended a training course run by the Italian Taekwondo Federation (FITA) in Formia - just days after another refresher course was held.

The educational activities herald the return of something approaching normal FITA activities following the coronavirus pandemic, which has hit Italy hard.

FITA President Angelo Cito opened the three-day course for aspiring coaches, which concluded with a written exam and practical test today.

"I am really happy for the large participation in the Aspiring Coaches Course, which represents first of all a wonderful opportunity to meet again in person here in Formia," Cito said.

"A course that I too did in the past, of which I still carry an indelible memory with me today.

"It goes from learning for oneself to teaching to train other people, which amounts to a great responsibility.

"You will be the example for your athletes who will always count on your preparation and your skills, for their growth as athletes and as people."

Cito went on to add that "fairness, loyalty and sacrifice" would be required by all to be successful coaches, but that FITA "is at your service".

Course modules covered training activities, nutrition and desired characteristics in a coach, with masterclasses and technical analysis offered.

It also factored in a viewing of Italy's 2-1 win over Belgium in the UEFA European Championship and an in-person introduction to the taekwondo players who will represent Italy at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.

World champion Simone Alessio, Vito Dell'Aquila, Antonino Bossolo have all qualified for the Games, with Bossolo set to become Italy's first taekwondo Paralympian.
