Montenegro won their third Men’s Water Polo World League Super Final title in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi as they beat surprise finalists the United States 9-8.

Veteran Aleksandar Ivovic produced an outstanding performance in the final, scoring five goals to enable his team to add to their previous victories in 2009 and 2018.

The US had shocked world champions Italy by defeating them 10-8 in the semi-finals of this International Swimming Federation event.

"USA played much better than in our group game [Montenegro won 10-6) and congratulations to them and also I congratulate all my team," winning head coach Vladimir Gojkovic said. 

"This is an important step going into the Olympics."

The Italians suffered a further setback in the bronze-medal match as they were beaten 10-8 by a Greek side they had defeated 11-8 in the group stage.

Konstantinos Genidounias scored three goals for Greece and took the man-of-the-match award.

Earlier, Japan beat Kazakhstan 17-10 to earn fifth place, with Yusuke Inaba finishing the tournament with 20 goals.

Seventh place went to France after their 10-5 win over the host nation.

While the Super Final 2020 was not a qualifying event, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic tournament is composed of the following teams: Serbia, Water Polo World League 2019 gold medallist; Italy, World Championships Gwangju 2019 gold medallist; Spain, World Championships Gwangju 2019 silver medallist;
