Angola claimed a third consecutive title at the African Women's Handball Championship after overcoming hosts Cameroon in the final in Yaoundé.

Both nations came through tight semi-finals two days ago at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex, including an extra-time win for Angola over Tunisia.

Angola enjoyed a more straightforward match in the final as they stormed to a 14-7 half-time lead.

Cameroon were unable to close the gap in the second half.

Angola sealed a 25-15 victory to retain their African title.

Victory will give Angola a boost ahead of next month’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where they will be the sole African representatives in the women’s tournament.

Angola are due to face hosts Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Montenegro and South Korea in the group stage next month.

Angola and Cameroon were joined on the podium at the African Championships by Tunisia.

Tunisia were 22-17 winners against Congo in the bronze-medal match.

The top four all qualify for the World Championship in Spain in December.

Senegal overcame the Democratic Republic of Congo 24-14 in yesterday’s fifth-place playoff, while Guinea beat Nigeria 25-21 to finish seventh.
