Abderrahmane Hammad has been re-elected President of the Algerian Olympic Committee (COA).

The incumbent received 105 votes in today's election in Algiers, compared to 48 for challenger Abdelhakim Boughadou.

Algerian Swimming Federation President Boughadou was Hammad's only challenger.

Hammad now has a four-year mandate which will encompass both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Hammad only became COA President in September 2020, after International Olympic Committee member Mustapha Berraf quit, but because he was completing Berraf's term, Hammad faced re-election nine months later.

Berraf still leads the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, winning a second term as President last month.

Hammad, now 44, was an elite-level high jumper and won a bronze medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Additionally a three-time African champion, Hammad twice finished runner-up at the African Games.

Algeria has won five Olympic medals since Sydney 2000, three courtesy of middle-distance runner Taoufik Makhloufi.

Nine of the nation's 17 all-time Olympic medals have been won in track and field events.
