It was a mixed day of fortunes for the top seeds as the Tokyo 2020 European boxing qualifier continued in Paris.

In the men’s featherweight category boxers in the quarter-finals were already assured of places at Tokyo 2020.

Despite knowing his Olympic place was secured, top seed Britain’s Peter McGrail suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat to Roland Galos of Hungary.

Samuel Kistohurry of France was a comfortable 5-0 winner against Tayfur Aliyev of Azerbaijan and will face Galos in the last four.

Albert Batyrgaziev of Russia was a narrow 3-2 victor over Hamsat Shadalov of Germany and Batyrgaziev will face Mykola Butsenko of Ukraine in the semi-finals, who secured a passage through by walkover.

In the men’s welterweight category the top seed Pat McCormack of Britain was a emphatic 5-0 winner at the quarter-final stage against Eskerkhan Madiev of Georgia.

McCormack will face Ireland’s Aidan Walsh in the last four after he defeated Yevhenii Barabanov of Ukraine 3-2.

In the other half, Lorenzo Sotomayor of Azerbaijan defeated Aliaksandr Radzionau of Belarus 5-0, while Andrey Zamkovoy of Russia overcame Necat Ekinci of Turkey by the same scoreline.

Six places at Tokyo 2020 are up for grabs from this category and will be awarded to the four semi-finalists and the winners of the two Olympic box-offs, which will be between Madiev and Barabanov and Radzionau and Ekinci.

Six Olympic berths are also available from the men’s middleweight category, where the semi-final line-ups were confirmed today.

In the quarter-finals Gleb Bakshi of Russia, the top seed, enjoyed a walkover win against Vitali Bandarenka of Belarus.

Bakshi will face Andrej Csemez of Slovakia, who defeated Lancelot Proton de la Chapelle of Belgium 5-0 to also reach the last four.

In the other half of the draw Arman Darchinyan of Armenia won 3-2 against Georgia’s Giorgi Kharabadze, while Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine earned victory when his opponent Adam Chartoi of Sweden was disqualified.

The semi-finalists will be joined at Tokyo 2020 by the winners of the two Olympic box-offs, which will be between Bandarenka and de la Chapelle and Kharabadze and Chartoi.

In the women’s featherweight category, six places are also up for grabs at the Olympics, with the women’s semi-finalists confirmed today.

Italy’s Irma Testa won 5-0 against Nikolina Cacic of Croatia while Maria Nechita of Romania was a victor by the same scoreline against Aycan Guldagi of Turkey.

In the other half, third seed Stanimira Petrova of Bulgaria triumphed 4-1 against Britain’s Karriss Artingstall while second seed Michaela Walsh of Ireland defeated Stephanie Thour of Sweden 5-0.

The four semi-finalists will be joined at Tokyo 2020 by the winners of the two box-offs, which will be between Cacic and Guldagi and Artingstall and Thour.

The evening session started with the semi-finals in a box-off in the women’s welterweight category, to determine the remaining boxer who will feature at Tokyo 2020 in this discipline.

Saadat Dalgatova of Russia overcame Ani Hovsepyan of Armenia 4-1 while Karolina Koszewska of Poland defeated Emilie Sonvico of France 5-0.

Dalgatova will next face Koszewska to determine who takes the remaining place at the Olympics in that category.

In the men’s lightweight category the athletes that reached the quarter-finals had already secured their places at Tokyo 2020.

The semi-final line-up was determined today with all four victors running out 5-0 winners.

Gabil Mamedov of Russia and Dzmitry Asanau of Belarus beat Yaroslav Khartsyz of Ukraine and Damian Durkacz of Poland respectively in the top half of the draw, while Luke McCormack of Britain and Sofiane Oumiha of France beat Enrico Lacruz of the Netherlands and Javid Chalabiyev of Azerbaijan respectively in the bottom half.

In the men’s heavyweight categories the winners of the quarter-finals would secure the four Tokyo 2020 places available.

Top seed Muslim Gadzhimagomedov of Russia beat Aziz Mouhiidine of Italy 5-0 and will now face Ammar Abduljabbar of Germany after he defeated Uladzislau Smiahlikau of Belarus by the same scoreline.

In the bottom half, Britain’s Cheavon Clarke edged to a 3-2 win over Vagkan Nanitzanian of Greece, and will now take on Emmanuel Reyes of Spain in the last four, after his opponent Radoslav Pantaleev of Bulgaria was disqualified.

The same scenario applied in the men’s super-heavyweight, the final category of the night, with the semi-finalists securing the four Olympic places.

Mahammad Abdullayev of Azerbaijan overcame Tsotne Rogava of Ukraine 4-1, and will face Mourad Aliev of France in the last four, after he defeated Giorgi Tchigladze of Georgia 5-0.

Ivan Verisov of Russia beat Petar Belberov of Bulgaria 5-0 and will face Britain’s Frazer Clarke in the last four, after he secured his Tokyo 2020 berth by beating Eren Uzun of Turkey by the same scoreline.
