Whittaker beat Paul Arădoaie of Romania via a split decision to move through to the quarter-finals of the light heavyweight class.

Liridon Nuha will be the British boxer’s next opponent with Tokyo 2020 qualification spot on the line after the Swede beat Stiven Aas of Estonia.

Ireland’s Emmett Brennan, Luka Plantić of Croatia, Turkey’s Bayram Malkan and Spain’s Gazimagomed Jalidov also reached the last eight.

In the women’s welterweight category, top seed Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey beat Finland’s Elina Gustafsson and will now meet Armenia’s Ani Hovsepyan who overcame Martina Schmoranzová of the Czech Republic.

There were also victories for Ukraine's Anna Lysenko, Russia’s Saadat Dalgatova, Angela Carini of Italy, Émilie Sonvico of France, Nadine Apetz of Germany and Karolina Koszewska of Poland.

Women’s featherweight top seed Liudmila Vorontsova of Russia lost to Italian Irma Testa.

Nikolina Ćaćić will Testa in the quarter-finals which also features Aycan Güldağı of Turkey, Maria Nechita of Romania, Stanimira Petrova of Bulgaria, Karriss Artingstall  of Britain, Stephanie Thour  of Sweden and Michaela Walsh of Ireland.

Britain’s Caroline Dubois upset Finland’s Mira Potkonen who was top set in the women’s lightweight division.

Dubois now faces Italy’s Rebecca Nicoli , while Nikoleta Pita of Greece, Agnes Alexiusson of Sweden, Esra Yıldız of Turkey, Kata Pribojszki of Hungary, Maïva Hamadouche of France and Kellie Harrington of Ireland also progressed to the last eight.

Quarter-finalists in the men’s flyweight, featherweight and lightweight divisions will earn an Olympic quota, alongside the best six boxers in the women’s flyweight, women’s featherweight, women’s lightweight, men’s welterweight, men’s middleweight and men’s light heavyweight.

Four qualification slots will be up for grabs in the women’s middleweight, men’s heavyweight and men’s super-heavyweight, while five quota places will be available in the women’s welterweight event.

The event in the French capital is being organised by the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Boxing Task Force (BTF) following the suspension of the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
