More than 180 athletes are set to compete at the Pan American Wrestling Championships in Guatemala as preparations continue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Pan American Championships had initially been scheduled to take place in Brazil, but the event was moved to Guatemala in March due to concerns over the COVID-19 situation in the country.

The Teodoro Palacios Flores National Gymnasium will host competition over four days, with action beginning tomorrow and taking place until Sunday (May 30).

Athletes from 16 different nations are set to feature.

The United States’ two-time world champion Kyle Dake will be among the participants in the men’s under-74-kilogram freestyle competition.

Dake will represent his nation at Tokyo 2020 after beating London 2012 Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs in a head-to-head contest at the country’s trials last month.

He will hope to secure the continental crown with less than two months until the start of Tokyo 2020.

Dake is expected to face competition from Puerto Rico’s Franklin Gómez, a four-time medallist at the continental event.

Agustín Destribats is another Tokyo 2020-bound athlete to feature on the start list, with the Argentine wrestler set to compete in the men’s under-65kg freestyle event.

American Ildar Hafizov will compete in the men’s under-60kg Greco-Roman event, as he builds towards the Olympic Games.

Five-time world champion Adeline Gray also forms part of the US squad in Guatemala and will compete in the women's under-76kg event.

Greco-Roman competition will be the focus of the first day of competition.
