Nepomniachtchi tied with France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave to move onto 8.5 points, giving Dutch player Giri an opportunity to go level with the leader going into the final round if he won.

Vachier-Lagrave now has seven points.

Instead Nepomniachtchi's compatriot Alexander Grischuk upset Giri, defeating him to end any challenge to the leader.

As the winner of the tournament, the world number four now gets to face Norwegian Magnus Carlsen for his world crown, a contest scheduled to take place in Dubai in November.

Giri remains on 7.5 points, while Grischuk moved onto 6.5 points.

The United States' Fabiano Caruana moved onto seven points following a victory over China's Wang Hao, who remains on five.

Finally, China's Ding Liren won against Russia's Kirill Alekseenko in a bottom of the table clash.

Ding is now on six points, while Alekseenko remains bottom on 4.5.

On the final round, Nepomniachtchi faces Ding, Caruana and Grischuk play each other, Giri plays Alekseenko and Vachier-Lagrave finishes his tournament against Wang.
