Both individual and team events are planned the men’s and women’s A and B categories in a single weapon, depending on demand.

A demonstration event is also being considered, where wheelchair fencers and able-bodied fencers will compete together in a team format.

The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing said it was gathering information from countries to establish how many athletes they have in each category and weapon. 

It said this will help determine the final programme.

IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Executive Committee chairman Pal Szekeres said: "It is great to be working with the organisers and national federation to create new opportunities for wheelchair fencers to compete at a high level.

"This is an exciting opportunity for athletes and countries and we hope to hold a really good competition in London.

"I encourage all Commonwealth countries with wheelchair fencers to get involved."

The Commonwealth Fencing Championships are being organised by the Commonwealth Fencing Federation and England Fencing.

The event is set to take place at the University of East London SportsDock.

IWAS members have been contacted to ask for information about their teams.

IWAS Wheelchair Fencing is also seeking to encourage other Commonwealth countries to come forward.

The data gathered will help IWAS Wheelchair Fencing and London 2022 establish the final medal event programme.
