Mexico won the Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship (CMOQ) after the hosts beat Honduras on penalties in Guadalajara.

The two countries had already secured their places at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by virtue of winning the semi-finals of the tournament against Canada and the United States respectively.

Mexico won their third straight CMOQ and eighth in total after winning the shoot-out following a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Akron.

Honduras took the lead in the final thanks to a long-range strike from Edwin Rodriguez in the 72nd minute.

Ten minutes later Mexico levelled from the penalty spot when Jose Juan Macias converted following a foul inside the box.

The two sides remained level until the end of normal time and could not be separated after 30 minutes of extra time.

This meant the contest went to penalties and after Mexico keeper Sebastian Jurado saved Honduras' first spot-kick, the hosts converted all five of their efforts to seal victory.

Mexico, who claimed gold in the men’s Olympic football tournament at London 2012, and Honduras, who will compete in a fourth consecutive men’s Olympic football tournament, join Japan, France, Germany, Romania, Spain and New Zealand in the men's field.

The line-up also includes South American giants Argentina and Brazil, African representatives Egypt, Ivory Coast and South Africa and Asian representatives Australia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.

The draw is scheduled to take place on April 21, with matches in the men’s tournament due to take place in various stadiums across Japan between Thursday July 22 and Saturday August 7.
