Mexico and the United States moved a step closer to booking a place at Tokyo 2020 after reaching the semi-finals of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) men's Olympic qualifier in Guadalajara.

Hosts Mexico secured their spot in the last four with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica, while the US beat the Dominican Republic 4-0.

The two sides are now a semi-final victory away from sealing their place in the men's Olympic football tournament at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games.

The defeats for Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic spelled the end of their chances of qualifying for Tokyo 2020, pushed back to this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hassani Dotson scored twice for the US in their rout of the Dominican Republic, with Jackson Yueill and Djordje Mihailovic also getting in on the act at Estadio Akron in Zapopan.

The win pushed the US to the brink of progressing to the last four and their passage to the semi-finals was confirmed thanks to Mexico's victory over Costa Rica.

Uriel Antuna put Mexico ahead early on before Alexis Vega and Francisco Cordova found the net in the second half in a commanding display from the host nation.

The tournament continues tomorrow with the second matches in Group B.

Canada and Honduras will clinch a semi-final place if they beat Haiti and El Salvador, respectively.

The winners of the two semi-finals will earn a place at Tokyo 2020.

The CONCACAF berths are the last two places at the men's Olympic football tournament to be decided.
