In-form Slovenian rider Primož Roglič is closing in on winning this year’s Paris-Nice crown after securing back-to-back stage victories.

Roglič of Team Jumbo-Visma finished the 119 kilometre seventh stage in a time of 3hr 9min 18sec after pipping breakaway rider Gino Mäder of Switzerland.

Mäder looked on course for victory but Roglič managed to catch the Bahrain Victorious rider in the final 50 metres to win by two seconds.

It was Roglič’s third win of this year’s competition and leaves him in a strong position to secure this year’s title ahead of tomorrow’s final stage.

Germany’s defending champion Maximilian Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe finished five seconds further back in third and now trails Roglič by 52 seconds in the general classification.

"The team worked really well," said Roglič.

"At the end there was a possibility, so I went for it.

"It was hard all day, especially from the beginning.

"A short but sweet stage. In the end, it was really tight, but luckily I managed to come past on the finish line."

Organisers were forced to make changes to the final two stages of the event after a COVID-19 lockdown in Nice led to pressure from the local authorities.

Stage seven started at Le Broc instead of Nice before finishing at Valdeblore La Colmiane, shortening the route from 166.5km to 119.2km.

The race is set to conclude tomorrow with the 92.7km eighth stage looping around Nice by starting at Le Plan du Var and finishing at Levens.
