World Championships bronze medallist Besra Duman of Turkey claimed gold in the women's up to 55 kilograms category on the opening day of the World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Bogotá.

Duman topped the podium with a best lift of 117kg to beat nearest challenger Camila Campos of Chile by 10kg.

The bronze medal went to Wiunawis Hernandez of Venezuela after she lifted 85kg.

It was the only category where three medals were awarded on the first day of competition in the Colombian capital.

Duman was one of two Turkish gold medallists on day one as Yasemin Ceylan Beydar earned the up to 61kg honours after recording 105kg.

Cristina Poblador of Colombia won the women's up to 41kg division with a lift of 85kg, while Lourdes Maciel of Argentina took gold in the up to 45kg category after managing 63kg.

World junior champion Donato Telesca of Italy impressed in the men's events, winning the up to 72kg gold medal with a best effort of 183kg.

Telesca beat Panama's Rey Melchor Dimas Vazquez by 18kg to secure the title.

Parapan American Games gold medallist Jorge Carinao of Chile was the clear victor in the up to 65kg category.

Carinao lifted 168kg, 33kg more than Jose Abud Coronado of the Dominican Republic in second place.

Competition is scheduled to continue tomorrow.
