A new 31-acre park is due to be completed in Birmingham in Alabama in time for the American city's hosting of the 2022 World Games.

CityWalk BHAM will be built in space below the I-59/20 interstate bridges and is being overseen by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

The public space will include sports pitches, a skate park, children's playgrounds, a classroom, a market, a beer and wine garden, a dog park, water features, food trucks and displays of art.

ALDOT regional engineer DeJarvis Leonard has said the project should "transform" downtown Birmingham.

Its completion will be a boost for visitors to the city for the World Games next year.

Birmingham was due to stage the multi-sport event this year, but the coronavirus crisis pushed the Games into 2022.

This was to avoid a clash with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which are now due to start in July.

The dates for the World Games are now July 7 to 17.
