Iran's best taekwondo athletes are set to travel to Bulgaria next month for the Sofia Open ©World Taekwondo

Iranian taekwondo players are scheduled to travel to Bulgaria to compete at the Sofia Taekwondo Open in March - their first international event for more than a year.

The Sofia Open is scheduled to take place on March 6 and 7, with the Iranian team slated to travel to the Bulgarian capital on March 4, according to the Iranian Mehr News Agency.

This event currently has 117 athletes from 12 countries registered to take part.

Bulgaria's national taekwondo team is coached by an Iranian, Farzad Zolghadri, the close links have been established been the two nations' taekwondo programmes.

This month, Bulgaria's team travelled to Iran for a pre-Olympic camp, training with the host national team.

Iran's team travelling to Sofia includes world silver medallists Armin Hadipour, Sajjad Mardani, Soroush Ahmadi and Mirhashem Hosseini, Asian Games silver medallist Amir Mohammad Bakhshi, and Mehran Barkhordari.

Hadiour, who won bronze, and runner-up Ahmadi were among Iran's three medallists at the 2019 World hampionships.

Following the event, the team is set to stay in Bulgaria for a 10-day camp.

In addition to the Sofia Taekwondo Open, the Bulgarian capital is also due to stage taekwondo's European Championships from April 8 to 11 and the European qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on May 7 and 8.
