The Spanish Para Badminton International - the sport’s last qualification tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games - is scheduled to be held in May, it has been announced.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed the event will run from May 10 to 16 after revealing its Para-badminton calendar for 2021.

Cartagena was originally due to stage the competition in March last year only for it to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Since then, no international Para-badminton tournaments have been held hampering athletes’ preparations for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Games where the sport will make its long-awaited Paralympic debut.

The BWF has released a list of eight competitions for 2021, starting with the Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International due to held from March 29 to April 4 in the United Arab Emirates.

After the Spanish Para Badminton International, Dublin in Ireland is scheduled to hold the Irish Para Badminton International from June 21 to 27 before Japanese capital Tokyo is set to stage the Paralympics from August 24 to September 5.

Thomas Lund, secretary general for the BWF, said the main priority was to ensure the completition of the final qualifier for the Paralympics as well as maximising participation.

"We are fully aware that the lack of international Para badminton tournament activity has been challenging for all players, and very frustrating," said Lund.

"We thank the playing group for their patience, support and cooperation in allowing us to form this calendar.

"The debut of Para badminton at the Tokyo Paralympic Games remains a key milestone for us, and BWF is committed to ensuring an inspirational first appearance on the Paralympic sports programme.

"COVID-19 has indeed been a barrier to the growth and development of Para badminton and the ability of players to participate in international competitions.

"But we are confident that with tournaments back on the horizon, and the prospect of seeing our players back on court, we can keep building international competition pathways for athletes, grow global participation and integrate Para-badminton into BWF’s existing systems and structures during the COVID-19 era."

After the Paralympics, the BWF plans to stage the Peru Para Badminton International in Lima although the dates have yet to be confirmed.

Players are expected to return to Tokyo for the BWF Para Badminton World Championships from October 25 to 31.

This is then set to be followed by the Uganda Para Badminton International in Kampala from November 15 to 21 and the Asian Youth Para Games in Manama in Bahrain from December 5 to 9.

The BWF promised it would publish an update qualification timeline for Tokyo 2020 after consultation with the International Paralympic Committee.

Badminton has been allocated 90 slots in14 medal events for the upcoming Paralympics.
