Francesco Friedrich is closing in on winning his fourth overall two-man bobsleigh title after achieving a sixth straight International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup victory in Königssee.

With push athlete Thorsten Margis behind him, Friedrich produced a winning time of 1min 38.69sec after runs of 49.40sec and 49.29 on his home track.

Johannes Lochner, who remains the only athlete to defeat Friedrich in the two-man discipline this season, finished second with Eric Franke in 1:38.89.

Third place went to Benjamin Maier of Austria who teamed up with Kristian Huber to register a time of 1:39.69, almost a second behind Friedrich and Maier.

Justin Kripps and Cam Stones of Canada came fourth in 1:39.84 while British duo Brad Hall and Greg Cacket produced their best two-man bobsleigh result this season with a fifth-place finish.

Swiss pair Michael Kuonen and Marco Tanner, who were competing in the IBSF World Cup for just the second time, finished eighth.

Having won 10 of the 11 two-man bobsleigh competitions this season, Friedrich holds a 191-point lead at the top of the standings on 2,460 points ahead of the final stage in Innsbruck in Austria, scheduled for January 30.

Johannes Lochner has registered 2,269 after six second-place finishes and only a victory gives him a mathematical chance of winning the overall title.

A 26th-place finish in Innsbruck would be enough for reigning double Olympic champion Friedrich to retain his World Cup crown.

Swiss bobsleigh pilot Michael Vogt is third overall with 1,794 points.

Also in Königssee, Kaillie Humphries of the United States secured her second Women's Monobob World Series victory of the season.

The American, who is a two-time two-woman bobsleigh Olympic champion, came out on top in Königssee courtesy of a winning time of 1:46.75 after almost identical runs of 53.36 and 53.39.

Her compatriot Elana Meyers Taylor took silver in 1:47.37, while Germany’s Stephanie Schneider finished third in 1:47.50.

Kim Yoo-ran of South Korea, competing for the first time in the 2020-2021 Women's Monobob World Series, surprised many by finishing fourth in 1:47.68.

The next leg of the series is due to be held in Innsbruck on January 30, with American Nicole Vogt the outright overall leader on 350 points.

Königssee is set to host further bobsleigh competitions tomorrow, with the four-man and two-woman events due up.
