The Asian Games bronze medallist, who contracted coronavirus last November, suffered a bad fall at a crucial stage in the third game as it offered Christie a match point.

But after receiving treatment on his left shoulder Prannoy showed great resilience to hold firm and complete a bruising comeback victory, winning 18-21, 21-16, 23-21.

Asked about the fall, Prannoy said he felt his shoulder getting dislocated but then snapping back into place.

"I thought it went off but luckily it fell back in place," said Prannoy.

"I thought the fall was bad.

"Hopefully nothing will happen, but these things might start hurting after a few hours."

Other notable men’s first-round clashes saw second seed Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei beat Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand 21-16, 21-4 and fourth seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark cruise past Canada’s Jason Anthony Ho-Shue 21-9, 21-8.

There was joy for home favourite Kunlavut Vitidsarn who came from a game down to beat Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 14-21, 21-16, 21-10.

Seventh seed Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong overcame Taiwanese player Kantaphon Wangcharoen 22-20, 21-12.

In the women’s section, seventh seed An Se-young of South Korea dismissed Taiwanese teenager Phittayaporn Chaiwan 21-12, 21-8.

Olympic champion Carolina Marin, the Spanish fifth seed, downed Qi Xuefei of France 21-9, 21-18.

There was also a big shock on court two where 18-year-old Benyapa Aimsaard defeated a player ranked more than 100 places above her.

Aimsaard of Thailand dispatched Evgeniya Kosetskaya of Russia in three games, triumphing 21-15, 17-21, 21-19.

In the all-Danish clash, Mia Blichfeldt was forced to withdraw after injuring her hamstring as Line Højmark Kjærsfeldt advanced to the second round.

There were few surprises in the men’s doubles, with second seeds Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia seeing off English pair Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge 23-21, 21-15.

But Ellis remains in the mixed doubles competition as he teamed up with Lauren Smith to beat Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing of Malaysia 14-21, 21-15, 21-19.

French pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue produced an inspired display to knock out Indonesian second seeds Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti 14-21, 21-9, 21-13.

Elsewhere, fourth seeds Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yujung of South Korea defeated Danish duo Mikkel Mikkelsen and Rikke Søby Hansen 21-9, 21-10, while sixth seeds Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia claimed a 21-15, 21-13 victory over compatriots Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari.
