Music producers and other cultural figures gathered in the Chinese city of Hangzhou to seek inspiration for the 2022 Asian Games.

They travelled to many of the city's landmarks, including the main stadium for Hangzhou 2022, the Hangzhou International Expo Center and the Archaeological Ruins Park of Liangzhu Culture and the Grand Canal.

The idea was to help the group learn about Hangzhou's historical and cultural development.

There were also discussions between guests about how to integrate Hangzhou's culture at the Games, as the producers look to compile a soundtrack for the event.

Hangzhou native and television programme planner, lyricist, poet and playwright, Zhu Hai, said the the city's urban landscape is one of the best ways for musical inspiration.

"Hangzhou has not only made many achievements in sports construction, but also boasts a rich landscape and garden culture," said Zhu.

"The music composed for the Hangzhou Asian Games should reflect these features, which coincide with the exquisite character of the city."

Another songwriter, Tian Di, spoke about Hangzhou's centuries of culture, while young poet Chen Weidong stressed the need for songs that were catchy for people to sing.

Chen also wrote the lyrics for a song called "Listening to the Rain by the West Lake", which features Hangzhou as its main topic.

"There is a sentence in 'The Spirit of Asia', the anthem of the Beijing Asian Games: 'in our Asia, trees are linked in roots,'" said Chen.

"It showcases the solidarity of all the countries in Asia in the most straightforward manner and so will our Hangzhou Asian Games musical works."

On International Olympic Day on June 23, the Hangzhou 2022 Organising Committee started a campaign to solicit musical works for its event from around the world.

This call is open to both the public and professional musicians.

Around 1,400 musical works have been submitted so far.
