A digital transformation project led by the Guatemala Olympic Committee (COG) and the agency responsible for sport in the country has received a national award.

The project - spearheaded by the COG and the Confederación Deportiva Autónoma de Guatemala (CDAG), and developed by strategic firm N3XT Sports - has been given the National Innovation Award 2020 by the nation's Government.

United States-based N3XT Sports has been working with the COG and the CDAG for two years, coordinating educational sessions with coaches, athletes, the applied sciences team and the high performance team to help them make the best use of data in sport.

The COG and the CDAG also developed a short, medium and long-term strategic plan as part of the project.

"We are very honoured to have won the National Innovation Award, for us this is one more motivation to continue working on the innovation projects in which we are working to improve the performance of our athletes," said COG adviser Alvaro Reynoso.

"If we work as a team under this system, we are able to launch innovative projects."

COG President Gerardo Aguirre said the partnership with N3XT Sports had been beneficial for athletes in Guatemala.

"From the leadership standpoint, for many years, we have been looking for novel ways to improve the competitive level of our athletes to be able to compete against the best," he said.

"Now, thanks to the use of technology and innovation, we can offer better tools to our athletes but also to lay the foundations for future generations."
