Organisers for the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski and Snowboard Cross World Cup events in Montafon in Austria have postponed the competitions due to weather concerns.

Initially scheduled to take place from December 9 to 12 2020, the new dates have been announced as January 13 to 16 2021.

This decision was made in cooperation with the Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV) and the FIS.

"We were ready, prepared and fully motivated to give the ski and snowboard cross athletes the World Cup opening that they deserved," said Christian Speckle, head of the Organising Committee for the event.

"Especially in these weird times, we wanted them to have something 'normal' but unfortunately, the current weather situation is too difficult and changes our schedule.

"Now it's time to look forward to have a pair of good competitions at the beginning of 2021."

It follows on from the postponement of another FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup in Cervinia in Italy, being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This event could take place between January and March 2021 instead.

It now means the Snowboard Cross World Cup is currently set to start in mid-January at the new Montafon date.

"We all knew that this season was going to be challenging, but of course the reasons for the postponements result from circumstances that we have no power over," added FIS Snowboard Cross race director, Uwe Beier.

"Nevertheless, I want to thank the highly-motivated Organising Committee of Montafon and the ÖSV to put that much energy into the preparations and furthermore for their willingness to postpone the competitions to the already confirmed date in mid-January."

December events in Arosa in Switzerland and Val Thorens in France are currently set to take place in December for the start of the Ski Cross World Cup.
