The FIAS is in the running to win the Innovative Action of the Year award in recognition of the Online Sambo Cup which aimed to promote the Russian martial art across the world.

Taking place in June and July, the competition was an online quiz challenging athletes on their knowledge of sambo techniques.

The FLAG21@Home campaign and TIBU Maroc’s Sa7ti Friyadt initiative have also been nominated for Innovative Action of the Year which bids to celebrate an organisation that uses new technologies as a tool for sustainable peace, education and social development.

It is one of five prizes up for grabs at the 2020 Peace and Sport Awards with the winner of each category to be revealed online from December 14 to 18.

The National Olympic Committee of Kosovo has been chosen for the APRIL6 Initiative of the Year after encouraging athletes, fans and officials to take #WhiteCard pictures and videos while staying at home because of the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 5,000 people took up the challenge, including the Olympic judo champion Majlinda Kelmendi.

The International Judo Federation, Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Georgia, Palestine: Sports for Life and Portugal’s secretary of state for youth and sport will also contest the award after taking part in the April6 initiative.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is celebrated annually on April 6 across the globe.

The Indochina Starfish Foundation’s Football for Change Outreach Project in Cambodia, America SCORES’s football-for-youth-development programmes and Dutch Volleyball Federation’s Volleyball4Life have been nominated for the Sport for Development and Peace Program of the Year award.

The 2019 International Automobile Federation European Rally Championship in Cyprus, Olympic Channel’s Olympic Day Workout campaign and Olympique Lyonnais Foundation’s Together against COVID-19 project will battle it out for the Special Jury Prize.

The winner of the Champion for Peace of the Year – which was won by South Africa’s rugby star Siya Kolisi in 2019 - will also be announced next month.
