Switzerland’s Léa Sprunger will not defend her European 400 metres hurdles title at Munich 2022 after announcing she will retire from athletics at the conclusion of the 2021 season.

Sprunger made the announcement on Twitter.

"Good morning season 2021," Sprunger wrote.

"I am so ready for you.

"Last one, best one."

Sprunger claimed gold at the European Championships in Berlin in 2018, but she will not aim to defend her title in another German city Munich in 2022.

The 2022 event will be the second edition of the multi-sport European Championships, which will feature nine sports.

Berlin and Glasgow co-hosted the 2018 event, with athletics held in the former.

Paris had been due to hold the standalone European Athletics Championships this year, but the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sprunger is targeting competing at the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympics next year.

The 30-year-old previously competed at London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Sprunger has enjoyed success in recent years, winning the European title outdoors and indoors.

She also placed fifth at the 2017 World Championships in London, before placing fourth at the 2019 event in Doha.

She could potentially defend her European Indoor Championships title before retirement, with Torun in Poland scheduled to host the event in March.
