Burgos Cathedral will host the start of the 2021 Vuelta a España, with a time trial set to begin in the building to mark its 800th anniversary.

Organisers Unipublic announced riders will begin the time trial through the main entrance of the cathedral.

The riders will complete an "urban circuit" which will aim to highlight the "monumental character of the city”.

The route will take them past the city’s castle, before it concludes back at Burgos Cathedral.

The opening stage is due to take place on August 14.

"This sporting event will be added to the commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the Burgos Cathedral and other milestones that will come together in Burgos," organisers said.

"Such as the year of Jubilee granted by the Vatican, the Jacobean Year, the 800th anniversary of the death of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the exhibition Las Edades del Hombre."

Organisers presented a "first view" of the time trial with Spanish rider Ángel Fuentes, who rides for Burgos BH, rolling down a start ramp wearing a jersey designed to mark the 800th anniversary of the Burgos Cathedral.

The 2020 Vuelta a España concluded yesterday.

The race was shortened to 18 stages due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Slovenia’s Primož Roglič won the Grand Tour for the second successive year.

Organisers will hope to revert to 21 stages and its typical August to September time slot in the calendar next year.
