Double Olympic medallists Alistair Brownlee of Britain and Switzerland's Nicola Spirig are among the athletes set to compete when the truncated Triathlon World Cup season concludes in Valencia tomorrow.

The Spanish city will play host to the final sprint-distance World Cup race of a campaign heavily disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brownlee, winner of the men's title at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, will line-up in a men's race which also includes world champion Vincent Luis.

South African Henri Schoeman, a former world champion who won the men's gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, and Norway's Gustav Iden are expected to challenge.

In the women's race, Spirig is likely to be in contention for victory but could face a stern test from the likes of Germany's Lisa Tertsch and Italy's Verena Steinhauser.

The race starts with a 750 metre, one-lap swim of Valencia Marina, transitioning into a 4-lap, 20km bike around the edge of the harbour.

The 5km run will follow the same route.

Both the women's and men's races are due to take place tomorrow.

The event in Valencia will be only the fourth Triathlon World Cup to have taken place in the past 10 months.

The coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of two World Cups in Hungary and South Korea, but two others - in Italy and the Czech Republic - went ahead following the resumption of the season.
