New York City’s historic Millrose Games is set to stage one of six gold-level World Athletics Indoor Tour meetings in 2021.

Viewed as one of the oldest and most prestigious indoor meetings in the world, the Millrose Games has been added to the circuit for the upcoming season.

It will be the 114th staging of the event, organised by the New York Road Runners.

The World Athletics Indoor Tour is scheduled to begin in Karlsruhe in Germany on January 29 before moving to Boston in the United States on February 6.

After competing in Liévin in France on February 9, athletes are set to head to the Armory Track in New York City for the Millrose Games on February 13.

Four days later, competitors are expected to travel to Polish city Torun for the ORLEN Copernicus Cup.

The tour is then due to end on February 24 with a meeting in Spanish capital Madrid.

The scoring disciplines will be the 400 metres, 1,500m, 60m hurdles, high jump and long jump for men and 60m, 800m, 3,000m, 5,000m, pole vault, triple jump and shot put for women.

Each athlete’s best three results will count towards their overall points score with the winner awarded $10,000 (£7,700/€8,600) along with a "wild card entry" into the World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2022.

There will also be silver and bronze meetings with funds distributed between the three levels.

"The prize money allocation has been restructured to allow World Athletics to give more funds directly to the individual meetings, which will assist them to remain financial viable in these challenging times, and to maintain or increase the prize money on offer to athletes," a statement from World Athletics said.

"Each gold meeting will offer at least $7,000 (£5,400/€6,000) in prize money for each individual event on the programme, including $3,000 (£2,300/€2,600) to the winner.

"Silver meetings in the expanded tour will award at least $30,000 (£23,000/€26,000) and bronze meetings will offer at least $12,000 (£9,300/€10,300)."

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, World Athletics said the plans are provisional, conceding "dates and venues could change as the season approaches".

World Indoor Tour event organisers are also being advised to develop COVID-19 health and safety protocols and mitigation plans.
