Vancouver has been announced as the host of next year's Skate Canada International, marking the first time in more than 40 years that the event will visit the city.

It is due to take place at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre from October 29 to 31 in 2021.

The Skate Canada International is typically the second event in the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figuring Skating series.

This year's Skate Canada International - due to be in capital city Ottawa - was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Skate Canada chief executive Debra Armstrong said the organisation was "thrilled" to be working with Vancouver and the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, and was focused on "creating memorable moments for all skating fans".

The ISU Grand Prix of Figuring Skating features five other legs - in the United States, Japan, China, Russia and France - plus a final.

Other venues in Vancouver have hosted the ISU World Figure Skating Championships, in 2001 and 1960.

"Sport Hosting Vancouver is proud to continue our relationship with Skate Canada with the hosting the 2021 Skate Canada International," said Michelle Collens, the partnership's senior manager.

"Our combined hosting history will allow us to creatively reimagine the event experience and ensure the confidence to deliver live events once again.

"We look forward to welcoming both participants and spectators back to British Columbia when it is safe to do so."

Skate America took place in Las Vegas earlier this month, but two 2020 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events - the Skate Canada International and Internationaux de France - have been cancelled, while the end-of-series final, scheduled for China, has been postponed.
