matt shelhon_19-01-121January 19 - Britain's top disabled shooters have received a major boost after being granted 11 slots at the London 2012 Paralympic Games shooting competition.

It was International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Shooting who announced the allocation of the 132 qualification slots by country for the Paralympics and Britain have the second most slots behind Korea, who leads the list with 12 slots for their athletes.

Germany and Russia are next on the list after both were awarded eight slots for the 2012 Paralympic shooting event.

Eight of the total 140 slots have not yet been allocated and will be issued via Bipartite Invitation in March to ensure equal global representation.

The slots were allocated to the National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) via mathematical formulas which rewards country's that have performed well in the sport over the last few years.

Countries now have until August 6 to make the final decision on which of their athletes will participate in the Games.

Britain's Matt Skelhon (pictured) will arguably be Britain's biggest shooting gold medal contender as he looks to replicate his form at Beijing 2008.

The 27-year-old from Peterborough, who took up competitive disability shooting after being injured in a car accident in 2005, claimed victory in the 2008 Paralympic title by firing a world record equalling 600 out of 600 in the Chinese capital.

The London 2012 Paralympic shooting competition will see a total of 100 men and 40 women compete across 12 medal events at the historic Royal Artillery Barracks on the edge of Woolwich Common.

The venue is famous for its rich heritage, which dates back to 1716, when a Royal Warrant authorised the formation of two artillery companies at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich.

The current building was constructed between 1775 and 1802.

Meanwhile, the sport of shooting has been part of the Paralympic Games since Toronto in 1976, when three events were held.

At one point the number of events expanded to as many as 29, but since the Sydney 2000 Games a standard 12 events have been included.
