The Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) Council has approved a new World Health Organization (WHO) tool launched to improve the safety of competitions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The GAISF Council meeting was held at the new World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) headquarters in Pully in Switzerland.

Pully is one of the eastern suburbs of Lausanne, where many International Federations (IFs) are based, and the new WBSC offices were opening in July in a ceremony attended by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

It is claimed the WHO tool, developed with help from the IOC, will help to "further facilitate the safe hosting of competitions".

Feedback on the successful mitigation of COVID-19 risks is set to be included in a database that aims to develop WHO’s guidance on hosting events during the pandemic.

The International Federation of Teqball’s application to gain full GIASF membership was also unanimously approved by the Council and is set to be put forward at the next General Assembly, where the Association of Paralympic Sports Organisations and World Transplant Games Federation could become associate members.

The Council discussed plans for the General Assembly, which is expected to be held in November in Lausanne but also exist online, alongside the IF Forum, with the coronavirus pandemic making it impossible for many to attend.

"Today’s GAISF meeting was very productive and the lovely setting of the WBSC headquarters clearly helped," GAISF President Raffaele Chiulli said.

"We were able to discuss a number of key priorities that will benefit GAISF’s members and the millions they serve and move those priorities forward.

"I am so proud of the way that sport continues to adapt and inspire us during these challenging times, and we will do everything possible to support our members in their continued efforts to bring sport back in a safe environment.

"We look forward to continuing the ongoing exchange of best practice and key lessons among our members in the near future."

The WBSC hosted the Council meetings for GAISF and Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF) at its new headquarters.

WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari, who is also the ARISF secretary general and a GAISF Council member, attended both meetings.

"Our ambition when establishing our new and permanent global headquarters in Pully - adjacent to the Olympic capital, Lausanne - was to make sustained and substantial contributions to the Olympic Movement," said Fraccari.

"Our offices were built with functionality in mind and we are delighted to be sharing this functionality with members from our Olympic family."
