The Vienna City Marathon has been pushed back from April to September 2021, with organisers claiming this will provide an "improved overall COVID-19 situation".

Runners are now set to participate in the Vienna City Marathon on September 12.

Registration for the marathon, half-marathon and relay marathon is scheduled to open soon.

Those who were registered for this year's event, cancelled due to the global health crisis, can remain registered if they choose.

Organisers claimed pushing the race back would give "reliability and planning security".

"Our goal is to make the Vienna City Marathon safe and atmospheric," said race director Wolfgang Konrad.

"However, we cannot carry out the extensive conceptual and preparatory work for the marathon under unknown and changing conditions.

"We want to organise running events and will do so according to the current rules.

"For the Vienna City Marathon, however, moving the event to September is more realistic."

Coronavirus cases in Austria have doubled over the last two weeks and new measures are being introduced to curb the spread.

The country has reported more than 37,400 cases and 765 deaths in total.

"It is clear that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, events like the Vienna City Marathon have to cope with great challenges," said Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig.

"However, in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, holding the event in September 2021 offers a clear perspective.

"We hope that the marathon can be held on this new date."

The Vienna City Marathon has been an annual event since 1984.

Ethiopia's Getu Feleke set the men's course record of 2 hours 5mins 41secs in 2014, while Kenya's Nancy Kiprop set the women's record of 2:22:12 last year.
