Calo Oliveira_with_medal_at_Parapan_Games_November_15_2011November 16 - Brazil dominated the action in the pool at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, taking six gold medals in 13 medal events to storm to the top of the swimming medals table.


Calo Oliveira (pictured above centre) broke a record in the men's 400 metres freestyle S8 in 4min 53.83sec, Daniel Dias took the men's butterfly S5 and Joana Silva broke a record in the women's butterfly S5 in 50.61 as she took gold.

Also picking up Brazil's gold medals were Vanilton Filho in the men's 50m freestyle S9, Andre Brasil in the men's freestyle S9 and the 4x100m freestyle relay team, who finished ahead of Mexico and Argentina.

Cuba's Lorenzo Perez broke a record in 31.44 to claim his second gold of the Games in the men's 50m freestyle S6, and compatriot Rafael Castillo also broke a previous best time to claim the men's 50m butterfly S6 in 33.69.

The crowd in the Aquatics Centre had a home gold to cheer when Doramitzi Gonzalez took gold in the women's 50m freestyle S6.

Colombia also won gold in the men's breaststroke SB12 through Daniel Giraldo Correa, and Argentina's Anabel Moro broke another record in the women's version of the same event in a time of 1:25.13.

Argentina also had a gold medal to cheer in the women's 50m freestyle S9 through Daniela Gimenez, and there was more glory for the home nation when Vianney Trejo took gold in the women's 50m butterfly.

Brazil have won 13 gold medals, 10 silver and 13 bronze in the pool, whilst Mexico are second in the swimming rankings with nine gold, 13 silver and six bronze, and the United States are in third with five gold, four silver, three bronze.
