Multiple world champion Simone Barlaam broke three Para-swimming world records during a national event in Rome.

Barlaam, who competes in the S9 category, set world records in three events across three days at the Sette Colli Frecciarossa trophy.

The 20-year-old clocked 26.59sec in the 50 metres butterfly, lowering the global mark by 14 seconds.

The seven-time world champion then knocked over a minute off the 50m backstroke world record after recording a time of 27.81.

Barlaam completed a hat-trick of world records at the competition in the Italian capital when he touched the wall in the 100m freestyle in 53.56.

"Three fantastic world records for Simone Barlaam who in these days has written a piece of history of Paralympic swimming and Italian sport," said Italian Paralympic Committee (CIP) President Luca Pancalli. 

"As President of the CIP and above all as a former swimmer, I can only express my warmest congratulations to this extraordinary athlete who is redesigning the boundaries of this discipline."
