Singapore Disability_Sports_Council_dreams_14-10-11October 13 - The Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) has raised more than $200,000 (£126,000/€144,000) for the country's para-athletes at a gala dinner.

The event was held in the city-state at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront hotel, where they celebrated the launch of Dreams, the SDSC's recent publication.

Ten copies of the book were sold for $5,000 (£3,100/€3,500) each, and were personally signed by the President of Singapore, S R Nathan.

The President wrote the foreword of the book, and the money raised from the evening will be a boost to Singapore as it looks to prepare for London 2012.

In 2008 at the Beijing Paralympic Games, Singapore won four medals, including a gold, claimed by swimmer Yip Pin Xiu (pictured) in the women's 50 metres backstroke S3 class, who also took silver in the women's 50m freestyle S3.

Xiu's gold was the country's first in history at the Paralympic Games, and her story is one of 11 included in the book, which also features the rise of para-equestrienne Laurentia Tan, who won Singapore's two bronze medals in 2008.
