paul_deighton_28-09-11September 27- London 2012 chief executive Paul Deighton has hailed the "unprecedented" interest in the Paralympic Games following the conclusion of the ticket application window last night.

"We are still sorting through the final numbers but we are delighted with the outcome," he tolld said.

"We have sold hundreds and hundreds of thousands, a very impressive return.

"In Paralympic terms, it's unprecedented.

"There's a substantial number of sessions where we will have to go to ballot because they've been over-subscribed, which again I think is probably a first for the Paralympic Games.

"Our projections for Paralympic ticket sales were always pretty strong, so basically what we are going to do is hit our target."

Paralympic Games tickets were on sale until yesterday evening at 6pm GMT, and organisers were optimistic they would attract significant interest after many missed out on the chance to watch the Olympic Games.

Tickets for the Olympics were oversubscribed, leaving thousands disappointed, but Deighton revealed that there will be another offering next year.

"The remaining Olympic Games tickets will come back on sale probably in April next year when we have finalised precisely all the venues...so we know exactly how many tickets we have got left for each sport," he said.

Deighton also added that Britain's status as the home of the Paralympic Movement was one of the reasons for the popularity of tickets for London 2012, saying that there was "much more interest here than is typically the case."

He said that applications had been across a wide variety of sports and not just the most popular ones, and added: "I think people also see it as a way of continuing the celebrations of the summer of 2012, of being part of the whole thing and getting into seeing some of our great venues."
