The Americas Olympic boxing qualifier for Tokyo 2020 in Buenos Aires was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak back in March.

Competition was due to take place in Argentina's capital between March 26 and April 3.

It followed a move from the Argentinian Government to restrict international events in the country with immediate effect.

The boxing tournament at Tokyo 2020 will be run by an International Olympic Committee (IOC) task force after the International Boxing Association were stripped of involvement for a series of governance issues.

VOC President Eduardo Álvarez participated in a digital meeting discussing the progress of reorganising the event.

Venezuelan Boxing Federation President Luisa Benítez was also present on the call, along with working group members Leandro Larrosa, Breno Pontes and Federico Muller.

The working group revealed that Buenos Aires is still expected to host the Americas Olympic qualifier, with the event potentially organised during the first quarter of 2021.

"We do not stop in planning and working together with the international Olympic entity and National Federations, Venezuela has a long history in boxing and we hope that all this pandemic can end to give continuity to the different qualifying events for the Olympic Games," said Álvarez.

Benítez added "It was a productive meeting, since it allows us to reorganize ourselves to work to find the best conditions for our athletes."

Qualifying events in Africa and Asia were completed before the coronavirus crisis forced a shutdown of sport worldwide and led to the postponement of Tokyo 2020 by a year.

The European Olympic qualifier was halted during the event due to coronavirus.

The competition and the Americas qualifier are expected to take place prior to a World Olympic qualification event, giving boxers a final chance to secure their places for the Games.
