The Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) has announced plans to hold a "speed kicking" online tournament.

The event will take place on July 11 and 12 with at least 250 athletes already signed-up.

According to the PTA, the tournament will be the first of its kind in the world.

It has been created to allow athletes "more action" amid the shutdown of sport due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Stephen Fernandez, the PTA's grassroots director, said the idea came after Filipino athletes won three gold medals at the online European Poomsae Championships in May.

"With this tournament there is something they can look forward to aside from training," Fernandez said to the Manila Bulletin.

Contact sports such as taekwondo are still prohibited in The Philippines due to COVID-19.

The PTA hopes that although the speed kicking event will not involve sparring, it will still help athletes both physically and mentally.

All of the athletes taking part will need to perform various exercises in order to receive a grading.

To date, there have been nearly 45,000 cases of coronavirus in The Philippines.

Nearly 1,300 people have lost their lives to COVID-19 in the Asian nation.
