After World Oceans Day on June 8, it expanded these materials in the languages of French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish.

The materials were developed by sailing event The Ocean Race in partnership with the World Sailing Trust and 11th Hour Racing, following the success of its own sustainability programme in the 2017-18 edition of the race.

These resources are free to download from the World Sailing website and are broken down into six topics, while having different worksheets for those between the ages of six and 12.

Those six topics surround the events and boats of World Sailing, climate change, wildlife and biodiversity, reducing waste, oil and fuel and finally boat cleaning and maintenance.

The resources are also expected to be translated into Arabic, Italian, Latvian, Turkish and Vietnamese too in the coming months.

Dean Reading, head of sustainability at World Sailing, said: "World Oceans Day is an important day to celebrate the ocean but also reflect on its health.

"There are a number of threats ranging from plastic pollution to climate change.

"These resources educate young sailors about the global issues with local solutions.

"There is also plenty of interactive activities to help young sailors learn more about the sport as well as how to protect our oceans as every sailor should."

The resources will also be distributed to the international members of the International Optimist Dinghy Association.

World Sailing has also been holding video conferences with young sailors on Zoom to teach during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, The Ocean Race has partnered with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to continue its work of sustainability in the sport.
