Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) President Ben Nunoo Mensah organised the distribution of food items to athletes to support them during the pandemic.

Food parcels containing rice, cooking oil, tomatoes and biscuits were given to ten weightlifters, coaches and officials, as reported by Ghana Web

"We acknowledge the fact that things are not normal as a result of the lockdown and we believe this presentation would help to assuage the challenges that our people are going through," said GWF acting communications director John Vigah.

"This gesture is also to encourage our athletes to stay home."

Ghana has just come out of a three week lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, but restrictive measures such as a ban on large gatherings are still in place.

The country has reported more than 1,250 coronavirus cases and 50 deaths.

Nunoo Mensah, who is also Ghana Olympic Committee President, has appealed to athletes to find the correct balance between training and rest periods during the pandemic.

"Athletes can take a break during this lockdown period and come back in full strength, but they must also bear in mind that there is no time for the resumption of activities," he said.

"With this, you must not completely suspend training, though you can take a good rest during this period."
