The Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) has been forced to cancel its Paralympic Athlete Day Festival in September due to the coronavirus crisis.

In a statement, the CPB said the decision to call off the event, scheduled for September 19, had been made "because there is still no forecast of a return to sports activities this year".

"The cancellation will be indefinite and, for the next edition of the event, a new notice will be opened," the CPB added.

More than 7,000 children participated in the first edition of the festival, held in 2018, while 10,000 took part the following year.

Around 70 venues hosted events and activities as part of the 2019 festival.

The cancellation of this year's event comes amid ongoing concern over the coronavirus pandemic.

According to latest figures, over 2.7 million people worldwide have been infected with COVID-19, resulting in more than 193,000 deaths.
