Sanya vice-mayor Zhou Jun conveyed the news to OCA director general Husain Al-Musallam in a letter, with the Games due to run between November 28 and December 6.

Last month, Sanya was declared free of coronavirus and the OCA said it was "full steam ahead" to the Games.

The news that no further cases have been reported "augurs well" for the event, the continental body said today.

COVID-19 originated in China but the country appears to now be over the worst of its outbreak.

"Since February 12, 2020, no new cases of confirmed infections have been reported in Sanya for 62 consecutive days, and the last confirmed patient was cured and discharged from hospital on March 8," said Zhou, who is also the deputy secretary general of the Games' Organising Committee.

"As of midnight on April 13, Hainan reported a total of 29 asymptomatic cases, including 18 cases in Sanya. 

"A total of 22 cases were freed from quarantine, while seven cases are still under medical observation. 

"Among the 29 asymptomatic patients, seven cases were imported from abroad.

"At present, the Organising Committee is speeding up the preparation in an orderly manner, hoping to bring everyone a trendy, green, fantastic and magnificent Asian Beach Games."

Chinese Olympic Committee President Gou Zhongwen had previously written to OCA counterpart Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al-Sabah to inform him that the coronavirus outbreak would not delay preparations for the Games.

Sanya is located on Hainan Island, which has never hosted a continental multi-sport event before.

Nineteen sports disciplines are due to be included on the programme.

"This is further encouraging news regarding our Asian Beach Games towards the end of the year," Al-Musallam said.

"The OCA has been in regular contact with the Organising Committee and with the Chinese Olympic Committee over the past three months and we have been very impressed with how the authorities have handled the COVID-19 outbreak in Sanya city and Hainan province.

"We appreciate there is still a long way to go in respect of controlling and preventing the spread of COVID-19 around Asia because the health, safety and well-being of our athletes is the most important factor.

"However, we remain hopeful that our Asian Beach Games can go ahead as planned in seven months' time. 

"We will continue to monitor the situation with the Organising Committee, the Chinese Olympic Committee and with all our National Olympic Committees in the five zones of Asia."

In October, Sanya 2020 revealed its emblem and slogan.

The motto for the Games is "See Ya in Sanya!" while the logo features a coconut tree, an athlete and a deer.

Ya Ya the deer is the Games' mascot, and features in sport pictograms which were revealed earlier this month.
