World Para Powerlifting has launched an online competition to support athletes amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The "Raise The Bar Together" event will run from tomorrow until April 17.

World Para Powerlifting has asked participants to make a small donation to local clubs or humanitarian aid organisations in lieu of an entrance fee.

The online event has been created to help athletes continue their training from their home during the COVID-19 crisis.

Competitors can submit up to three videos of lift attempts and will be ranked by their "AH" score, which is the result of a statistical coefficient.

The score is used to to equalise and compare athletes' performances between different body weights at competitions in the sport.

Technical officials are also set to be invited to judge the lifts on the online platform.

"It will be exciting to see the other athletes' lifts and results even from afar."

The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, which has killed more than 48,000 people and infected over 949,000, has forced a near total shutdown of sport worldwide.

It also led to the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games to 2021.

Para Powerlifting World Cups in Bogota, Colombia, and Dubai, scheduled for March and April, respectively, have all been cancelled because of the virus.

Several organisations have established online events in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
