Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been confirmed as his country's representative on the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board.

Ganguly has assumed the traditional slot on the ICC's ruling body reserved for the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

There had been speculation that the former BCCI and ICC chief N Srinivasan would represent India on the Board, but the ICC confirmed Ganguly had taken up the position following its latest meeting.

Ganguly, a former left-handed opening batsman who scored 7,212 runs in 113 Test matches for India, was elected BCCI President in October.

The ICC Board met by teleconference owing to the coronavirus pandemic which has swept the globe in recent weeks.

Topics such as the Men's T20 World Cup in Australia, due to be held later this year, and the impact of the pandemic on the World Test Championship were not discussed during the meeting.

Members thanked organisers of the Women's T20 World Cup for hosting a "successful, historic and inspiring" tournament, which concluded in Australia on March 8.

"We continue to undertake a comprehensive business continuity and contingency planning exercise which will allow us to adapt to the rapidly evolving world in which we find ourselves," said ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney.

"The ICC management will continue our contingency planning around ICC events and will also work with members to explore all options available to us based on a range of scenarios connected to the pandemic."

According to latest figures, more than 28,000 people have been killed by the virus, while in excess of 620,000 cases have been reported worldwide.
