The FIFA Council have approved the suggestion to postpone the planned FIFA Club World Cup to accommodate the postponed Copa America and Euro 2020 tournaments, while a working group will be set up to assess the impact on calendars, contracts and transfers.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had suggested the measures yesterday, as football attempts to adapt to the challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

UEFA yesterday announced Euro 2020 will be postponed until 2021 due to the pandemic, with the aim of providing European leagues that have been suspended an opportunity to be completed.

The tournament, which was due to have taken place in 12 cities across Europe from June 12 to July 12 this year, will now be held from June 11 to July 11 next year.

UEFA's Nations League and the European Under-21 Championships are also scheduled to take place next summer, while the 2021 UEFA Women's European Championship is set to be held in England.

The event begins on July 7, four days prior to the proposed men's final.

This year’s Copa America in Argentina and Colombia was also moved to 2021, with the event having the same dates as Euro 2021.

FIFA said the new dates had been included on the international match calendar.

The world governing body will decide at a later stage when to schedule the FIFA Club World Cup, with the new event having originally been scheduled to take place in June and July next year.

FIFA also confirmed it would establish a FIFA Confederations working group, which would monitor the evolving situation and work closely to agree on a coordinated approach addressing the consequences of this pandemic.

This will include ensuring appropriate global solutions are eventually found for competitions at all levels, considering the needs of all stakeholders and keeping the health of all participants as a first priority.

The working group will also assess the need for amendments or temporary dispensations to the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players’ to protect contracts for both players and clubs.

Player registration periods may also be adjusted.

A potential support fund may be established following the assessment of the economic impact faced by the football stakeholders in each continent.

Should a fund be necessary, the group would oversee how support mechanisms should be defined.

“This exceptional situation requires exceptional measures and decisions,” Infantino said.

“This crisis impacts the entire world and that is why solutions need to take into account the interests of all stakeholders around the world. We have shown again today a spirit of cooperation, solidarity and unity.

“These must be our key drivers moving forward and I would like to thank all the Confederations Presidents for their positive contributions and efforts.

“FIFA will keep in close contact with all stakeholders to assess and take the necessary steps to deal with the variety of issues we are facing.

“I count on the support of the whole football community moving forward.”

A proposal from Infantino to donate $10 million (£8.3 million/€9.1 million) to the World Health Organisation COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund was also approved.

FIFA said they would work together with the WHO to ensure the funds are used to support the fight against the coronavirus in all regions of the world.
