American-born Japanese figure skater Chris Reed has died at the age of 30 after suffering a heart attack.

Reed, who competed in ice dancing at two Winter Olympic Games with sister Cathy, passed away following a sudden cardiac arrest in Detroit.

"I am absolutely stunned by the sad news," Japanese Skating Federation President Nagashima Akihisa said.

"I would like to offer my deepest appreciation to Chris Reed for his contribution to Japanese ice dancing over the years and extend condolences to his family.

"May Mr. Reed rest in peace."

Reed, born to an American father and Japanese mother in 1989, chose to compete for Japan internationally.

A seven-time Japanese champion with his sister, Reed was also a Four Continents Championships bronze medallist and earned silver at the 2017 Asian Winter Games with Kana Muramoto.

He also teamed up with Muramoto for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang before announcing his retirement the following year.

"The International Skating Union (ISU) family shares its heartfelt condolences and kindest thoughts with Chris Reed's family and friends in this time of sorrow," the ISU said in a statement.
