Finals in Australia's top-tier domestic basketball league continued behind closed doors in Sydney today in a rare case of a sporting event going ahead amid concern over the coronavirus pandemic.

Perth Wildcats moved 2-1 in front in the best-of-five National Basketball League (NBL) finals series after recording a 111-96 victory over the Sydney Kings at Qudos Bank Arena.

The match was closed to the public after the NBL decided to stage the remainder of the games without fans due to concern over the COVID-19 outbreak.

Australia's Government has recommended a suspension of events of 500 or more people from tomorrow in response to the virus, which has killed over 6,000 and infected more than 162,000 worldwide.

Australia has reported 300 cases and five deaths from the virus, which has spread to over 150 countries and territories.

The NBL said the finals would continue unless any player, staff member or official associated with the event tests positive for the virus.

The fourth game is due to be held at the RAC Arena in Perth on Friday (March 20).

"The health and well-being of our players, staff, officials and fans is paramount," said NBL owner and executive chairman Larry Kestelman.

"As a family sport we felt this was the only decision to make.

"We commend the Kings, Wildcats and their ownership groups for supporting this move despite being a difficult commercial decision for all concerned.

"But they were just as resolute as us in regard to prioritising the welfare of players, staff and everyone else concerned ahead of commercial considerations.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and follow all protocols as outlined by the relevant authorities."
