This year's World Women’s Curling Championship in Canadian city Prince George has been cancelled due to the ongoing spread of coronavirus.

The event was scheduled to take place between tomorrow and March 22, with 13 Member Associations competing for the world title and coveted Olympic qualification points for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.

With it now not being held, the World Curling Federation (WCF) says it will consider the implications on Olympic qualification and discuss potential changes that will need to be considered with all the relevant stakeholders.

The decision comes following British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr Bonnie Henry’s recommendation, which was made after careful deliberation with local public health officials and the event organisers.

It was also taken considering other major sporting events that have been cancelled in recent days, and various national travel restrictions that are coming into force around the world.

"It’s with regret we’re announcing it is no longer possible to run this world championship," WCF President Kate Caithness said.

"However, the safety of our athletes, officials, staff and supporters is paramount which we cannot guarantee with the fast-evolving nature of this worldwide situation.

"My thanks go to Curling Canada, the Local Organising Committee, the City of Prince George and Northern Health for their prudent advice and input in taking this decision.

"Finally, my deepest appreciation to our athletes, officials and staff, and to curling supporters around the world for your patience and understanding in this matter."

For those who have already purchased tickets for the event, refunds will be made available at the original point of purchase after March 23.

If tickets were purchased online through ticketsnorth.ca, refunds will be processed automatically.

There is also an ongoing evaluation into the World Men's Curling Championship, due to take place in Scottish city Glasgow from March 28 to April 5, as well as the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and World Senior Curling Championships, both of which are scheduled to be held in Canadian city Kelowna from April 18 to 25.

Another event under the microscope is the European Curling Championships C-Division, set to run from April 28 to May 5 in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana.

According to the WCF, communication on all four competitions will be made separately, as is appropriate.

There are currently more than 100 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Canada.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, tested positive after returning from a trip to London.

The couple are now self-isolating.

According to his office, the Prime Minister is in good health and has no symptoms, but will remain in isolation for two weeks.
