Australia trounced Vietnam in the first leg of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament Playoff Round.

Playing in front of a home crowd of 14,000, Australia recorded a 5-0 victory at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle.

Captain Sam Kerr opened the scoring in the 10th minute, before Chloe Logarzo and Emily van Egmond made it 3-0 by the end of the first half. 

It was 4-0 by the 67th minute after Clare Polkinghorne got on the scoresheet, with Kerr then grabbing her second goal 10 minutes from the end.

Australia have all but booked their place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, but still must play the second leg against Vietnam.

The clash is scheduled to take place at Cẩm Phả Stadium on Wednesday (March 11). 

The overall winner of the playoff will join either South Korea or China at Tokyo 2020, with the two teams set to come up against each other next month.
