The Indians progressed to their first final by default after their last four clash with England was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Rain prevented any play at Sydney Cricket Ground with the rules sending India through as the winners of Group A.

England finished as the runners-up in Group B, with the situation prompting questions for the ICC about the lack of reserve days at the tournament. 

Hosts Australia, the holders and four-time winners of the event, beat South Africa by five runs in a shortened second semi-final which managed to beat the weather.

"Not to have the chance to fight for a place in the final is gutting," said England captain Heather Knight. 

"Wouldn't wish it on anyone."

India won all of their group games, including victory over Australia in their opening contest.

England were left to rue their group stage defeat to South Africa which ultimately saw them finish as runners-up.

"Unfortunate we didn't get a game, but there are rules and we have to follow it," said India's captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

"Having reserve days in the future will be a great idea. 

"From day one, we knew we have to win all the games because in case the semis don't happen, that would be hard for us."

Australia were asked to field by South Africa and scored 134-5, with captain Meg Lanning ending unbeaten on 49.

South Africa were then set a rain-revised target of 98 from 13 overs but they fell short and ended on 92-5.

"It was very stressful," said Lanning. 

"The waiting game during the day and at the ground. 

"The ground staff did a great job and we were lucky enough to come out the winners."
