Canada’s Amar Dhesi and Jasmit Phulka will seek to impress in front of a home crowd at the Pan American Wrestling Championships, with the four-day event set to begin tomorrow in Ottawa.

Dhesi and Phulka emerged as the winners of their events at the Canadian wrestling trials last year, as they aim to secure a place on the team for this year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Dhesi will compete in the men’s 125-kilogram freestyle competition at the Shaw Centre, while Phulka will feature in the 74kg event.

Both wrestlers will be hoping to put in strong performances ahead of the Pan American Olympic qualification event, due to take place one week later at the same venue.

The Canadian team for the Pan American Championships also features 2018 world champion Justina Di Stasio, who will compete in the women’s 76kg division.

Alexandria Town and Hannah Taylor will also compete for the hosts in women’s wrestling events at the continental event.

The hosts will expect to face competition from a strong United States’ team in women’s competitions.

The American squad includes reigning world champions Tamyra Mensah and Adeline Gray.

Anthony Ashnault, Jordan Burroughs and Kyle Snyder will compete for the US team in men’s freestyle events, with the trio aiming to defend titles earned last year.

Burroughs secured Olympic gold at London 2012, while Snyder matched the achievement four years’ later at Rio 2016.

Olympic champion Ismael Borrero Molina is also among the international stars expected to feature in Canada at the Championships.

The Cuban star is one of eight defending Greco-Roman champions set to compete.

Greco-Roman competition will be the focus of tomorrow's competition.
